Some students have always found reading difficult. Others did fine when the texts were short and straightforward, then hit a wall when the material got longer and more demanding in middle and high school. Either way, the gap tends to compound quietly. Students who find reading hard tend to avoid it, and students who avoid it fall further behind. Reading ability builds with exposure, so the less a student reads, the harder reading becomes.

That gap affects performance in every subject that requires reading and writing, which is most of them. It affects SAT and ACT scores. And it shapes college readiness in a way that can surprise families, because so much of higher education depends on the ability to read complex material quickly, critically, and with comprehension.

For students who want to close that gap, we offer reading enhancement programs in the fall.

Benefits of Reading Enhancement Programs

A New Way of Engaging with Text: Strong readers interact with a text as they go: they track the author's argument, notice structural cues, flag words they don't know, and form predictions and inferences in real time. Struggling readers tend to move their eyes over the page and hope meaning will surface. Our reading enhancement program teaches students to read actively and strategically, building habits that make complex texts more navigable and comprehension more reliable.

Enthusiastic Expert Instructor: All reading enhancement programs are taught by Emma, who brings creativity, differentiation, and energy to every session. She uses a structured, multi-faceted approach to meet each student’s individual needs, incorporating visuals and hands-on strategies to strengthen vocabulary, comprehension, and writing while closing gaps in foundational reading skills.

Interactive Small Group Learning: Classes are kept small intentionally. Students benefit from a small group environment that encourages discussion, comparison of interpretations, and direct attention from the instructor. Reading is often taught as a solitary activity, but talking through a difficult passage with peers is one of the most effective ways to sharpen comprehension and analytical thinking.

Guided Reading Practice: Reading improvement requires consistent, deliberate exposure to challenging texts, not just more screen time. In addition to weekly sessions, the program includes structured reading and response work at our Ambler office, where students work through passages and writing exercises with support from our teaching assistants. This built-in accountability keeps students engaged with the material and builds the stamina that longer standardized test passages demand.

Is this test prep? How does this work with test prep? Not exactly, but the two go hand in hand. These programs are designed to build genuine reading competency: a stronger grammar foundation, a larger functional vocabulary, and more comfort navigating dense texts. Because the SAT and ACT assess exactly those things, students who complete a reading enhancement program tend to see meaningful gains in their test scores as well.

For 9th, 10th, and 11th graders, this is an excellent way to build reading skills before beginning formal test prep. For 12th graders whose reading gaps surfaced during the test prep process, it's an opportunity to build the foundation they'll need for senior year, college, and beyond.
